Do I need travel vaccinations for Spain?

For most UK travellers visiting Spain, no additional travel vaccinations are routinely required beyond being up to date with routine UK immunisations.

However, depending on your medical history, length of stay, rural travel, planned activities or underlying health conditions, a travel consultation can help identify whether any additional protection or travel health advice would be beneficial.

Routine vaccinations

Before travelling, it is sensible to ensure your routine UK vaccinations are up to date.

  • Tetanus
  • Diphtheria
  • Polio
  • MMR
  • COVID vaccination where appropriate
  • Seasonal flu if eligible

Food and water precautions

Spain has excellent food hygiene standards, although travellers can still occasionally experience stomach upsets, especially during hot weather or self-catering holidays.

Simple food and water precautions can reduce the risk of travellers' diarrhoea and dehydration.

  • Drink plenty of water during hot weather
  • Wash hands before eating
  • Choose food from reputable restaurants
  • Keep food refrigerated during self-catering holidays
  • Take care with food left out in the sun

Mosquito bite prevention

Mosquitoes are present in parts of Spain, particularly during the warmer months and around coastal regions, lakes and rural areas.

Although the overall health risk remains low for most holidaymakers, avoiding mosquito bites is still sensible.

  • Use insect repellent
  • Sleep with air conditioning where available
  • Wear loose clothing during evenings
  • Keep windows screened where possible

Sun and heat advice

Heat-related illness is one of the most common health problems affecting visitors to Spain.

Protecting yourself from excessive sun exposure is an important part of travel health, especially for children, older adults and people with long-term conditions.

  • Use SPF 30+ sunscreen
  • Drink plenty of fluids
  • Avoid the strongest midday sun where possible
  • Wear sunglasses and a hat
  • Take breaks in the shade

Travelling with medicines

If you take regular medicines, make sure you have enough supply for your trip and keep medicines in their original packaging where possible.

It can also be useful to carry a copy of your prescription or a medication list, especially if travelling with several medicines.

When should I book?

If you think you may require travel vaccinations or tailored travel health advice, book around 6-8 weeks before departure.

If you are travelling sooner, we can still provide last-minute travel advice where possible.
